Grandma's New England Bars

Mary loves fall. The scents, the colors, the football. Fall is a time of change, promises of holidays and cooler weather. Jeans, purses, and earth tones are back, and we all naturally settle back into a routine. The flavors and spices of fall welcome us back to a simpler time, and lure us into a sense of comfort. Here is one of Mary’s favorite fall treats, one her own grandmother used to make. Enjoy!

Grandma's New England Bars

Mix together:

1 c. shortening

2 eggs

2 c. brown sugar

1 tsp. soda in

1 c. water

Blend dry ingredients:

3 c. flour

1 tsp baking powder

2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp cloves

Add last:

1 cup raisins

Mix shortening, eggs, and brown sugar in large mixing bowl. Dissolve soda in water in small bowl. Add soda water and blended dry ingredients alternately to shortening, egg & brown sugar mixture. Fold in raisins when well blended. Spread about 1/4" thick into greased & floured jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes. Watch closely, as ovens vary. Spread with thin glaze of powdered sugar frosting while still warm.
